If you’re a guy, and your dad, uncle, or any male blood relative is bald or in the process of becoming one, well chances are that you will, too. If you can remember WHEN they started losing their hair excessively (there will always be hair loss, but some people lose too much, way too soon), and you are nearing that age, you would be losing it soon, too. Hereditary hair loss in women can happen, as well. Though not as often in men, it happens more often than you think. Women don’t get the “cue ball” look as often, either, but the thinning around the same areas as in men can sometimes be noticeable.
There are a lot of other reasons why both men and women can lose hair, such as hormonal imbalances (thyroid problems), improper hair care (cornrows, tight braids, ponytails, and dreadlocks to name a few), as well as certain kinds of drugs (anti-coagulants, birth control pills for women, chemotherapy drugs and anti depressants are some).
The approach to addressing hair loss is different and oftentimes dependent upon their cause. The fastest and most universal “treatment” is to wear a hairpiece, many of which look really natural, and there are a lot of styles that one can choose from. There are also drugs that are formulated to specifically address hair loss such as hair growers that you can get without prescription. One can also opt for hair transplants or just shaving everything off like what Bruce Willis did.
For hormonal imbalances, the treatment would be to get the right hormonal levels, obviously. That can be through medication or a change in one’s diet or both. If the hair loss is due to medication, the hair will come back after the treatments (like in chemotherapy), but if the patient cannot do without the medication, the doctor may be able to prescribe other drugs instead. There are also instances that the excessive hair loss will revert by itself to normal levels such as those due to hormonal changes during pregnancy.
